Most of the cruelty we have received from you was not a result of what we committed against you, but often remnants of defeats in which we were never a party. Every harm that came to us from you was a price for disappointments we did not create, yet we paid it nonetheless at your hands. Every wall behind which we were trapped was not one we had ever raised, nor did we plant its thorns; others did so in our place! We have borne the burdens of those long gone who wreaked havoc in your hearts, and we were taken to task for the sins of others who harmed you, let you down, and hurt you. We bore no guilt for what others etched in your hearts, so do not treat us according to the weight of your painful memories, and do not make your experiences scales by which you judge us. Your wound does not justify wounding us, and every pained memory does not at all justify your ill will towards us!We are wounded souls like you, but we chose to rise above our wounds and treat you with nobility and kindness. It is not wise for anyone to punish another for what someone else has done. Therefore, we chose, with all the strength we have left and a desire for survival, not to respond to our pain with pain, not to shut our doors in the faces of those who have not wronged us, and not to generalize pain so we become executioners wearing the masks of victims, nor to distort the noble meanings we receive from people out of fear of repeating the hurt.We chose to remain compassionate, despite all that was broken within us. We chose to give those around us the chance to see them as they are, without preconceived judgments or heavy suspicions from experiences of harm. We chose not to be a repeated image of those who have wounded our hearts, hoping that in this, there is a life different from what we have known—a life that resembles what we have wished for ourselves… and for you!—
